The Reality of Living with a Spinal Injury

A Spinal Cord Injury can Change Everything ... Overnight

The transition from being fully able-bodied to becoming wheelchair-bound or bedridden is one of the most harrowing experiences a person can face. In developing countries like Uganda, this reality is made even harder by:-

  • Limited access to specialized treatment
  • Inadequate rehabilitation services
  • Misinformation and stigma
  • Financial hardships
  • Stress and Social isolation
  • Misinformation and delayed diagnosis
  • Life-threatening infections

Most spinal cord injured people in Uganda die within the first two years after injury not from the injury itself, but from the conditions surrounding it.

There is Hope

These realities inspired the formation of the Spinal Injuries Support Society (SISS) Uganda to provide hope, support and practical solutions that enable survivors to regain confidence, rebuild their lives and live independently.

Over 700 Annual Admissions in Mulago National referral Hospital

According to data collected at the Mulago Spinal ward unit at Uganda's main referral hospital, it is clear that more than 700 newly injured patients get admitted annually.

With a lack of specialized equipment for physical rehabilitation, assistive devices for Spinal Injured people, and inadequate information, the majority of the patients don't adopt or leave beyond the first 2 years after the injury.
